Professional Biography

Alan Goodman is a partner in the New Orleans office of Breazeale, Sachse & Wilson, L.L.P. While his good name and reputation are known nationally in the Chapter 11 and commercial litigation practice areas, Best Lawyers in America has recognized him in not only those two practice areas but also in the practice areas of mergers and acquisitions, distressed M&A, class actions, product liability, and real estate litigation. Alan was selected by City Business Newspaper for the Legal Hall of Fame in 2022 and has likewise been recognized by other publications for his broad experience in many practice areas including bankruptcy law.

Alan is Certified as a Mediator in Louisiana. Alan’s professional activities have included serving as an adjunct professor at Tulane Law School; serving as chairman and vice-chairman of various committees and subcommittees of the American Bar Association; being active in a leadership role locally and nationally in the Anti-Defamation League (e.g., Regional Board Chairman; Vice-Chairman, National Legal Affairs Committee; National Executive Committee); and serving on Governors’ and Mayors’ task forces and trade missions. He is a member of the bars of Louisiana and Washington, D.C.

A native of New Orleans, Alan graduated from the elite Newman High School as the Second Honor Student (and was All-State in basketball) and thereafter attended Tulane University on a basketball scholarship and graduated with honors.

He graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. where he served as the Articles Editor for the Georgetown Law Journal and was selected as “Best Editor” of the Law Journal.

He served as a law clerk for the Honorable Charles Fahy on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and practiced law at Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. for four years before returning home to New Orleans in 1975.

  • In re Communications Corporation of America and White Knight Holdings, Inc., et al , Case No. 06-50410, USBC, W.D. LA.: Represented junior secured lender in contentious Chapter 11 case.
  • In re JLH, L.L.C ., Case No. 99-11535, USBC, E.D.LA.: Represented major lender and obtained confirmation by consent of plan.
  • In re Wichita River Oil , Case No. 96-11660, USBC, E.D.LA.: Confirmed creditors plan for lenders after five day contested confirmation hearing, including dismissal of $100 million lender liability claim of debtor immediately following confirmation of creditors plan.
  • In re Canal Place Limited Partnership , 921 F.2d 569 (5th Cir. 1991): Represented major lender and obtained a lift of the automatic stay four months after the Chapter 11 case was filed.
  • In re Consolidated Companies, Inc ., Case No. 91-10422, USBC, E.D.LA.: Confirmed plan of reorganization by consent representing the debtor.
  • In re Gaylord Container, Case No. 92-3654-A, USDC, E.D.LA.: Confirmed pre-packaged plan of reorganization in less than 40 days from the date the chapter 11 case was filed.

The Bankruptcy Law Practice

Our bankruptcy and loan restructuring attorneys are particularly experienced in large, complex bankruptcies and in the representation of secured and unsecured creditors, lessors, lessees, debtors, and others. Our diversified client base includes the entire spectrum of competing interests in this field: financial institutions, developers, service companies, wholesalers, and many other types of businesses, as well as individuals. We represent lenders on a regular basis and have defended numerous lender liability claims in connection with this representation. Our representation of banks and other financial institutions in this area is well-known and highly respected.

The firm’s various sections rely upon this group’s experience when bankruptcy issues arise. In turn, BSW’s tax, banking, real estate and environmental attorneys provide this group with a wealth of experience which enables the firm to handle the most complex bankruptcy matters for its clients.

The collection group, through the development and design of a software system, used exclusively for collections, is able to maintain and monitor a substantial volume of files on a regional basis.
